Stain Glass Pressed Flower Laminated Glass Class

This 4-hour course offers those who have some experience with creating stained glass art through the copper foil & solder method the chance to expand their skills and learn how to "laminate" various found objects between glass pieces to create a one-of-a-kind sun catcher. Students should have experience with cutting glass and at least basic knowledge of the soldering process. Needing a quick refresher is completely fine, we just don't want to start from scratch on what students know. This is a great "next step" class for those who have taken a beginner class at SHAK before.

    Sunday, March 15th

    2:00-6:00pm

    SHAK Members- $60/per person

    Non-SHAK Members- $75/per person

A variety of dried, pressed flowers will be provided, however if students would like certain found objects within their piece, they should bring these items with them. Possible found objects that can be used are thinly pressed flowers, lace, fabric, snake skin, animal fur, human hair, and many other options. Items should lay fairly flat and have a low profile or depth.

Students are also welcome to bring crystals to attach to their pieces if they wish.

Students will also have access to our "scrap glass" bins, but if they wish to provide their own stain glass, they should bring it along with them. Students are encouraged to check out the glass available from Kokomo Opalescent Glass, but it can also be purchased at Hobby Lobby or from various websites.

Students are welcome to email the instructor, Jen Martin, at Jen@SHAKMakerspace.org with any questions about this.

Closed-toe shoes are required for all participants.

*Stained glass workshops are very popular and often fill quickly. Please register only if you plan to attend. Refunds and transfers to a different class date are granted on a very limited, case-by-case basis.*

Prescription glasses or reading glasses are recommended for those with vision needs but are not required.

Students may bring their own safety glasses and gardening or safety gloves (thick, protective gloves—thin plastic gloves are not permitted). These items are optional and only necessary if you prefer not to use the shared safety equipment provided. Safety glasses and gloves are available at most home improvement stores.

Participants are welcome to bring a snack or non-alcoholic beverage or visit Lexis’ Drink Barn next door.

Safety is our top priority. All students and assisting adults must be able to listen to and follow instructions to ensure a safe and successful class experience. Anyone unable or unwilling to follow instructions—particularly safety guidelines—will be asked to leave SHAK immediately without a refund.

Some examples of the types of projects students might create are listed below. These exact designs may not all be available for students, this is just to allow you to understand what to expect.

RSVP is not required but would be helpful. Attendance at both March sessions is also no required. Feel free to attend just one if you wish.

    Introduction to Amigurumi Crochet

Discover the adorable world of Amigurumi- the Japanese art of crocheting (or knitting) stuffed animals! This beginner-friendly course is perfect for those new to crochet, though experienced crocheters are welcome to join us.

This course is composed of two required class sessions:

    • Class 1: Sunday, March 22nd 1:00-5:00pm- Learn how to crochet in the round and start making the main body of your Amigurumi.

    • Class 2: Sunday, April 5th 1:00-5:00pm- Learn how to attach plastic eyes, stuff and close the body, embroider facial features, and attach smaller crocheted parts (ears, tails, wings, etc.)

    $25 for Non-Members*

    $20 for SHAK Members

Most students won’t finish making the body during the first class, so you’ll be encouraged to continue working on your project at home between sessions. To support your progress, two optional help sessions will be offered. Dates and times will be scheduled based on instructor and student availability.

All materials will be provided, including yarn, stuffing, weights, and plastic safety eyes. If you already own a 4mm/G-6 crochet hook (metal preferred), feel free to bring it. You’re also welcome to bring a stitch marker and row counter if you have one. Otherwise, we have plenty of hooks, stitch markers, and row counters available for you to borrow during the course.

We will use “beginner yarn” that won’t split or snag on your hook. If you find it challenging to see fine details, consider bringing a neck light, reading glasses, or a hands-free magnifier. We do have several adjustable floor lamps available to use while at SHAK.

Students under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian at all times.

Important Safety Note: Amigurumi are not suitable for pets or small children, as long yarn strands, stuffing, and plastic eyes may pose safety risks.

Non-Members who wish to join SHAK after a class may use $5 of their Non-Member registration fee towards their first month's dues. SHAK memberships are $35/month for individuals and $50/month for a family of 4.
